Our Story

Born at the Edge of Two Worlds

Where South African soul meets California coast — AfriCali is the sound of a collision that was always meant to happen.

The Stage That Started It All

It wasn't planned. Eyezon Soweto stepped onto the stage during Sky Country's set at the Nacarubi Festival in Big Sur — and to everyone watching, it felt like he'd been pushed there by something bigger than coincidence. His voice wrapped around the band's tight blend of funk, experimental jazz, and psych rock like it had always belonged there. That night, around a campfire with members of Fishbone, Rushad Eggleston, Mariee Sioux, and everyone who'd performed that weekend, the real conversation began.

"It was great to see African music come together with California music. They're actually very similar."

— Eyezon Soweto

The Music

A Hearty Cioppino of Sound

AfriCali is the name Eyezon gave to what he heard that night — a blend he described as a hearty cioppino of rock, blues, heavy rhythms and percussion of 1970s Ethiopian music, topped with coastal-psych seasoning. It's music that moves like a conversation: no rigid verse-chorus formula, just evolving episodes where every instrument speaks with intention. Vocals never overpower the instrumentation. Instruments never fade into the background. Guitars, keys, percussion, and voices weave together in constant motion.

The Collective

Eyezon Soweto

Vocals & Lyrics

South African hip-hop artist and poet, dubbed 'the black Jim Morrison' for his raw, politically charged delivery. Eyezon brings the ancestral weight of African music and the urgency of spoken word to every performance.

Nico Georis

Keys & Songwriting

The musical architect behind Sky Country and AfriCali, Nico plays keyboards like a lead guitar — melodic, rhythmic, and always in conversation with the room. His compositions form the backbone of the AfriCali sound.

Shaun Elley

Drums

The rhythmic engine of the collective, Shaun's drumming bridges the heavy percussion traditions of African music with the loose, improvisational spirit of California psych and jazz.

What We Believe

Music Without Borders

AfriCali doesn't chase trends — it honors roots while building something new. The collective was never going to take its music in a completely different direction. Instead, the fusion enhances and enriches what was already there. The result is music that feels experimental, open-hearted, and deeply contemporary — a democratic approach to sound where no single voice or instrument dominates.

"We weren't going to take our music in a completely different direction. Eyezon's stuff enhances and enriches the stuff we were already doing."
